A dissertation acknowledgement is a short section of your last academic project where you address the people who helped you get through your research and writing and thank them for their input or support. It’s placed at the beginning of your work, just after the title page and abstract, before you start the first chapter. As the name itself tells you, the entire purpose of this section is to be a thank-you note to everyone who, in any shape or form, took some part in creating your dissertation.

In this article, I've pulled together 25 dissertation acknowledgements examples you can borrow from, plus the practical stuff, such as who actually deserves a place in there, how long the whole section should be, etc. Read to the end, and you'll be able to write your own without agonizing over every sentence.

What are dissertation acknowledgements?

Dissertation acknowledgements are the section where you formally thank the people and institutions that helped you reach the finish line. The purpose is to credit the ones who guided you, funded you, put up with your endless work, and, generally, whoever gave you a hand when you needed one.

Tone, obviously, is very important here. It must read warm, sincere, even a bit personal, as this is one of the few spots in the entire document where you can write in your own voice. But you shouldn’t forget that this is still a piece of academic work, so you mustn’t lean towards informal or casual. Read a handful of examples of acknowledgement in dissertation work, and sincerity is what comes up the most.

Acknowledgments are but a small part of the entire dissertation length and run between 150 and 400 words, never more than half a page. Required or not? Depends on your university. Most students include one regardless because it costs you almost nothing to do it properly.

Who is commonly thanked in dissertation acknowledgments?

I read a fair number of acknowledgements while I was gathering information for this article, and what I’ve noticed is that in many of them, the same group of people is thanked (more or less), and there is even an informal order. You start with whoever mattered most to the research itself, then work your way out toward the people close to you. Here's the usual cast:

  • Supervisors and advisors: goes without saying, the people who steered the whole project get the first place.
  • Committee members and examiners: even if their contribution was a single comment at exactly the right moment, it's worth naming them for it.
  • Funding bodies and institutions: many funders actually require formal acknowledgement, so check your agreement.
  • Colleagues and lab mates: the peers who lent you equipment or argued through your half-formed ideas.
  • Study participants: your research wouldn’t exist without those who gave up their time for surveys and experiments.
  • Family, friends, and partners: the people who lived through the rough weeks right alongside you, often without much thanks at the time.

25 Dissertation acknowledgements examples

A strong dissertation acknowledgements sample sounds like a real person wrote it, and it names people specifically instead of thanking a vague crowd. The best ones I've come across avoid stiff, ceremonial language and just say what the person actually did for you. Steal the structure, swap in your own people, and you're most of the way there.

Standard & academic-focused examples

These fit most humanities and social science dissertations. The focus stays on people: your supervisor, your committee, the ones who read your drafts and lived through the process with you.

Example 1: supervisor-forward

I owe my deepest thanks to my supervisor, Dr. Elena Marsh, whose patience never seemed to run out even when mine did. She read every chapter more than once and always found the one flaw I'd convinced myself wasn't there. I'm also grateful to Dr. Tomas Reyes for stepping in during my second year when the project nearly stalled.

Example 2: short and understated

My thanks go to Professor Aitken for his guidance, to the Department of History for its support, and to my parents, who asked how the writing was going every single week for three years and meant it.

A thesis helper can assist with everything from formatting acknowledgements to polishing the final manuscript.

Example 3: longer, personal

This dissertation would not exist without a handful of people. Dr. Priya Nair supervised the work with a rare mix of rigor and kindness, and I learned more from her marginal notes than from most of the seminars I attended. My colleagues in the reading group challenged my thinking week after week. And to my wife, Hannah, who took on far more than her share of our life at home so I could finish: thank you does not cover it, but it's what I have.

Example 4: formal, social sciences

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my advisory committee, Professors Okonkwo, Delgado, and Fischer, for their careful reading and constructive criticism throughout the doctoral process. I am indebted to the librarians at the Weston Archive, who located sources I had assumed were lost.

Example 5: candid, a little wry

Writing this was harder than anyone warned me. I'm genuinely grateful to my supervisor, Dr. Cole, who tolerated three missed deadlines and one very dramatic email at 2 a.m. Thanks also to Sam and Dev, who dragged me out of the flat when I needed it and back to my desk when I needed that instead.

STEM, grants & sponsored research examples

If your work was funded or ran out of a lab, you've got extra bases to cover. These examples show how to credit grants, sponsors, and collaborators without letting the formal bits swallow the personal ones.

Example 1: formal grant acknowledgement

This research was supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. DGE-2140004. I thank my advisor, Dr. Wen Li, for her mentorship, and the members of the Computational Biophysics Lab for countless discussions that sharpened my methods.

Example 2: lab and collaborators

My thanks go to everyone in the Hartwell Lab. To Maria, who trained me on the mass spectrometer and rescued three experiments I would otherwise have ruined. To Jonas, for the late-night troubleshooting sessions. And to Dr. Hartwell herself, who gave me the freedom to fail and the guidance to recover.

Example 3: fieldwork and participants

I am grateful to the forty-two farmers across the Rift Valley who welcomed me onto their land and answered my questions with such generosity. This study is theirs as much as mine. Fieldwork was funded by the Rutherford Foundation, whose support made two seasons of data collection possible.

Example 4: industry sponsor

This project was conducted in partnership with Veltek Industries, and I thank Dr. Amara Osei and her engineering team for access to their testing facilities and for their technical input at every stage. I also acknowledge my academic supervisor, Professor Lindqvist, for keeping the research honest when commercial pressures pulled the other way.

Example 5: fellowship and computing resources

I gratefully acknowledge the Marie Curie Fellowship, which funded the entirety of this work. Computational resources were provided by the University High-Performance Computing Centre. My thanks to Dr. Fenwick for his supervision and to the systems team, who answered my panicked support tickets faster than I had any right to expect.

Short, concise & direct examples

Not every acknowledgement needs to run half a page. Some of the best ones are three or four sentences that say exactly what happened and stop. If you're short on time or just prefer a clean, no-frills approach, these are for you.

Example 1: the one-paragraph thank you

I thank my supervisor, Dr. Rowan Blake, for his steady guidance and honest feedback. I'm grateful to my parents for their support and to my partner, Leah, for her patience through a very long two years.

Example 2: bare essentials

My gratitude goes to Professor Ndiaye for supervising this work, to the Sociology Department for its resources, and to my friends, who kept me grounded when the deadlines piled up.

Example 3: direct and warm

Thank you to Dr. Chen, who believed this project was worth doing before I did. Thank you to my brother, Marcus, for the pep talks. That's the short version, but I mean every word of it.

Example 4: two sentences flat

I am grateful to my advisor, Dr. Petrov, for her insight and her honesty. I also thank the study participants, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Example 5: minimal but specific

My thanks to Dr. Alvarez for supervising the research, to the Hollis Grant for funding it, and to my flatmate Priya, who proofread the final draft at midnight and caught the typo in my title page.

Personal, emotional & family-centric examples

Some students want the acknowledgement to feel less like a formality and more like a genuine letter of thanks. These examples show how to put that front and center without tipping into sentimentality.

Example 1: to a partner

Above everyone else, I thank my husband, Daniel. He cooked, he listened, he read chapters he did not understand, and he never once suggested I quit, even during the months when I wanted to. This is as much his achievement as mine.

Example 2: in memory Of

I dedicate this work to my grandmother, Sofia, who did not live to see me finish but who told me, every visit, that she knew I would. I also thank my mother for carrying that same belief forward.

Example 3: to parents

My parents gave me every opportunity that led to this moment. They worked jobs they disliked so I could study things I loved, and I have never taken that for granted. Thank you, Mum and Dad.

Example 4: the whole village

This dissertation has many quiet authors. My sister answered panicked phone calls. My friends forgave months of canceled plans. My daughter, only four, learned the phrase "when Mummy finishes her book." To all of them, thank you.

Example 5: honest about the cost

Finishing this took more than I expected, and my family paid part of the price. To my wife and our two boys, thank you for your patience and for the weekends I owe you back. I intend to repay everyone.

Specialized & humanities scenarios

A few situations call for something outside the usual template. Maybe you worked with a community, translated archival material, or relied on a mentor in an unusual field. These examples cover ground the standard versions tend to miss.

Example 1: community-based research

I owe a profound debt to the residents of Kirkholt, who opened their homes and their histories to me. This project belongs to them. I thank the community centre staff for their trust and the oral history group for hours of recorded conversation.

Example 2: archival and translation work

I am grateful to the archivists at the Biblioteca Nazionale, who guided me through collections I could barely read at first. Special thanks to Dr. Ferrari, who checked my translations from the Latin and corrected my worst errors with great tact.

Example 3: interdisciplinary mentorship

This work sat awkwardly between two fields, and I was lucky to have a supervisor in each. Dr. Osei in anthropology and Professor Lindgren in public health guided me through the messy overlap, and their occasional disagreements taught me more than any single perspective could.

Example 4: creative practice dissertation

My thanks to the writers in my workshop, whose criticism made the creative component sharper and braver. I thank my supervisor, Nadia Rahman, for treating my fiction as seriously as my theory, and my late mentor, whose voice I still hear when I edit.

If you're facing a tight deadline, you can buy a dissertation online and receive professional academic assistance.

Example 5: fieldwork abroad

I am grateful to my hosts in Oaxaca, who welcomed a stranger with more warmth than I deserved. I thank my translator and friend, Beto, for making the fieldwork possible, and the Fulbright Program, which funded the year that changed how I see my discipline.

Master's students can look to buy thesis support for guidance with planning, drafting, and revising their papers.
